OLD SAYBROOK, CT — A fire destroyed a large home on Otter Cove Drive in Old Saybrook Thursday night, fire officials said.

The family was able to escape unharmed, according to the fire department.

The area does not have hydrants, which hampered efforts to extinguish the blaze, officials said. Firefighters had to get water from ponds and streams, sometimes cutting through ice to reach water they could use.
Firefighters from multiple area departments brought tankers and assisted in the effort, which continued throughout the night.
