If you ask your child "how was your first day at school?" ... he or sheΒ will probably say "fine."
You know, as in ... end of conversation.
If you're interested in finding out a little more, here are some tips from Joel School Principal Claudia Norman, a veteran of eight school seasons and first days ofΒ school.
"You really want to ask something specific," she said.Β
Here are some questions Norman suggested:
Did your teacher read you a book?
What did you learn?
Did you have a special? PE? Art?
Did you do any new math manipulatives today? How did you like them?
What did you like best about your day?
"It might be recess," Norman said. "That's fine. But just be more specific than 'how was your day' because maybe the last thing that happened was that someone sat in their seat on the bus and that's all they'll remember.'"
How did Norman's first day of school go? Fine! Check out the video to see the before, during and after of getting almost 700 children at the Joel SchoolΒ back on the road to home.Β
What do you ask to get your children talking after their first day of school?
