2 Danbury Schools Among 100 CT Schools With Highest Test Scores

DANBURY, CT — Two Danbury elementary schools have been named to U.S. News & World Report's annual list of Connecticut's top 100 elementary and middle schools, based on test scores.

Western Connecticut Academy of International Studies (AIS) came in as No. 58, while Great Plain School was listed at No. 70, officials announced on the Danbury Public Schools' website.

U.S. News ranked 848 Connecticut K-8 schools (560 elementary schools and 288 middle schools) based on math and reading proficiency and performance levels on state assessments. This year's rankings are based on data from the 2018-19 school year, officials said.

Two more Danbury schools ranked high on the list, as well: Westside Middle School Academy placed at No. 107 and King Street Intermediate School came in at No. 116.

"Our district has been steadily increasing in student enrollment, and clearly the result has been that it has made us more proficient in meeting the challenges of this growth," Superintendent Kevin Walston said. "I'm proud of all of our schools and our dedicated faculty and staff, and it is rewarding to have our students' progress recognized at this level."

Here's a look at the percentage of students at each school who scored at or above proficiency:

Western Connecticut Academy of International Studies:

• Math: 72 percent
• Reading: 77 percent

Great Plain School

• Math: 67 percent
• Reading: 77 percent

Westside Middle School Academy

• Math: 43 percent
• Reading: 58 percent

King Street Intermediate School

• Math: 42 percent
• Reading: 50 percent
