Attorney Casagrande’s selection to the 2022 Connecticut Super Lawyers list follows earlier prestigious awards and significant recent outcomes in a number of high-profile issues and cases.
Attorney Casagrande was named a Marvin J. Glink Private Practice Local Government Lawyer of the Year by the International Municipal Lawyers Association (IMLA) in 2019. In 2018, he was honored as the “Giant Slayer” among Connecticut counsel by the Connecticut Law Tribune (CLT) for his high-profile Municipal Law work.
Recent notable outcomes include guiding the Town of New Milford’s settlement with Candlewood Solar, including winning key concessions, and prevailing in the Connecticut Supreme Court on a Bethel crematorium case. He also won a major antitrust case in the state’s high court in 2020 concerning tying agreements for real estate brokerage fees. The case emerged from two formerly vacant parcels that were once part of the Union Carbide corporate complex in western Danbury, called the Reserve.
Another signature example of Attorney Casagrande’s work is the 1998 Union Carbide appeal of the municipal tax assessment valuation of its Danbury, Conn., headquarters, equating to a $307 million market value. As outside Assistant Corporation Counsel, Attorney Casagrande represented the City of Danbury. The trial court upheld the City’s valuation after a 24-day trial, Union Carbide appealed, and Attorney Casagrande ultimately prevailed before the Connecticut Supreme Court, safeguarding $10 million in tax revenue for the City.
