Why are you seeking this office?
I am running for re-election because I am truly committed to serving the Danbury community. In my first term, I secured unprecedented funding for our city, which will significantly enhance the lives of our residents. This past year alone, working with Mayor Roberto Alves, we were able to bring an additional $12 million from the state in municipal aid, more than any other town or city in the state. I am dedicated to making Connecticut more affordable, particularly for our seniors. That’s why I championed the largest tax cut in the state’s history and worked alongside my colleagues to expand tax exemptions on retirement income. There’s still much to be done, and I am eager to continue addressing these challenges head-on.
What do you believe is the No. 1 issue facing Connecticut, and how do you plan to address it?
The rising cost of living is a top concern for many residents, and we must tackle this issue directly. It’s essential to curb price gouging and rein in corporate greed. One effective approach is to enhance oversight on pricing practices to ensure fairness and transparency. We owe it to our community to take decisive action on this critical matter.
There have been an alarming number of deaths on Connecticut's roadways. Is there anything from a legislative standpoint that can be done to address that?
There are several legislative measures we can consider to improve roadway safety in Connecticut. We could enhance funding for infrastructure improvements, such as better lighting and signage in high-risk areas. Additionally, implementing stricter penalties for distracted driving and increasing support for public awareness campaigns can help change driver behavior. Strengthening laws regarding speeding and impaired driving, as well as promoting driver education programs, could also contribute to reducing fatalities on our roads. It’s crucial that we take a comprehensive approach to protect our residents and ensure safer travel throughout the state.
What are the major differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?
My experience in local government has significantly prepared me for this position. Growing up in a low-income immigrant family has given me a profound understanding of the critical role government should play in our daily lives. I believe government should be a supportive force, helping individuals without overstepping boundaries. Additionally, my in-depth knowledge of the challenges facing Danbury positions me as the ideal advocate for the 109th district.
What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?
During my first term, I secured $151 million for Danbury, funding education, local projects, and vital support for impactful Danbury non-profits. This year, in collaboration with Mayor Roberto Alves, we brought in an additional $12 million in municipal aid, with a significant portion dedicated to our public schools, which have faced funding challenges for years. This funding kept schools open and teachers employed. I am committed to continuing to represent Danbury in the legislature and to advocating for our city's needs.
Is there anything else you would like voters to know about yourself and your positions?
The residents of the 109th district know me as a dedicated and responsive advocate for their needs. I have always prioritized serving our community with commitment and determination, and I will carry that same passion forward as your State Representative.
