Danbury Aging In Place Council Responds To 65+ Demographic With New Initiatives

The Danbury Aging in Place Council will announce its response to the demographic shift before a walking tour this Thursday, Sept. 22.

The city of Danbury is in-line with national and statewide trends which, over the next 20 years, predict an increase in the older adult population by nearly 32%--the most rapid in history. The Danbury Aging in Place Council, comprised of community representatives from business, government, philanthropy, faith, health and social service providers, will announce its innovative response to this profound and permanent demographic shift. Following, the Council will host a walking tour of the one mile area of Main Street known as City Center, including the Elmwood Hall Senior Center, the Danbury Library/Innovation and the Danbury Music Centre. In addition to being a hub for economic development, the area has the largest number of residents over 65, and includes 8 senior housing complexes.

Of the 80,000 plus who live in Danbury, more than 9,200 are over the age of 65.

CT is the 7th oldest state in US by median age, the >65 population is growing 10X faster than any other segment; the state’s <65 is decreasing; and CT has the largest income gap in the nation, while a disproportionate number of Connecticut’s older adults are living with limited means.
