Danbury Considers Land Purchase Near Airport

Danbury will consider buying 11 acres of land south of Miry Brook Road that may be in the flight path to runway 35 at Danbury Municipal Airport.

The city is always on the look out for such land. If a developer buys it and builds houses or condominiums there, the city gets more noise complaints about airplanes and helicopters.

The property, 24 Miry Brook Road, is half-flooded during heavy rains, the existing owner, Fred Miller, told the city in the letter offering it for sale. The flooding has gotten worse over the years from Super 7 and construction in the area, Miller told the council.

Airport Administrator Paul Estefan said the land is wet and he didn't see a map until late last week. He will now look at the land to see if anyone else building on it would crowd the runway.

"I have to run the geometry and check," Estefan said.

City Council President Joe Cavo said he will keep an open mind about the city purchasing the land during Tuesday's City Council committee meeting. He said the city can't take responsibility for all of the development that has taken place in western Danbury over the last 50 years or why the land may be flooded.

He said the city is often asked to buy parcels too small or unfit for development, and he worries about the city's tax rolls, property lines and the city's liability for owning it.

"It creates a whole lot of issues, but I'll keep an open mind. What can happen is the Airport Administrator may want the land or the corporation counsel may support the purchase," Cavo said.
