Danbury Police Officer's Funeral Services Announced

Sgt. Drew Carlson's death has been ruled a suicide after suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

DANBURY, CT — Sgt. Drew Carlson will be laid to rest Friday at Saint Peter Cemetery Friday morning after he died Sunday due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a Southbury hotel room. The 13-year veteran of the police department died after barricading himself at the Wyndham Hotel.

The New Fairfield resident Carlson joined the force in 2004, rising to the rank of Sergeant in 2016. According to his obituary from the Green Funeral Home, he started his law enforcement career as a security officer at Danbury Hospital before moving to the department. He served as a field training officer and a mentor to officers, according to the obituary.

He received a Meritorious Citation in 2014 and a life-saving medal in 2016.

"Mr. Carlson understood the rigors of being a novice in the department, often working through holidays and selflessly taking on double shifts so that more junior officers could spend time with their families," according to his obituary.

The father of three is survived by his wife Erin and children Kayla, Taylor and Tyler. He attended Saint Peter School and Henry Abbott Technical High School, graduating in 1997. He was also a lifelong Mets fan.

"Mr. Carlson treated everyone he met with dignity and respect," reads his obituary."He especially honored military veterans and often went out of his way to buy a soldier a meal. He will be sorely missed."

A burial mass will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter Church on Main Street. His burial will follow at the Saint Peter ceremony. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Green Funeral Home on Main Street.
