Danbury Possibly Violated State Election Law: Report

City Republicans are under fire after the late Gregg Seabury's name was left on the ballot for Tuesday's election.

DANBURY, CT — Danbury's Republican administration decided to keep the deceased Gregg Seabury's name on the Republican ballot for Tuesday's election. The Secretary of State'soffice says it is threatening legal action after Seabury's name was kept on the ballot, reports the News Times.

Spokesman Gabe Rosenberg told the publication that lawyers with the Secretary of the State's office told city officials Republicans could either name a new candidate or take his name off the ballot. Under state law, any candidate who dies within 24 days of an election but not before 24 hours should either be replaced or removed from ballots.

City Republicans said late Monday that Seabury's name would remain on the ballot and the position would be filled by a regular vacancy. Seabury died Saturday.
