Danbury Rally Supports Immigration Reform

More than 100 people gathered at the Danbury Public Library Tuesday afternoon in favor of federal efforts to reform immigration laws.

Among the people who gathered in downtown Danury Tuesday to support immigration reform was Jim Juliano of the AFL-CIO's Danbury Central Labor Council. Juliano said the council and the AFL-CIO supports immigration reform. Eleven million people came to the United States, and they have proven they're here to work. Resolve the problem and put them to work, Juliano said.

Emanuela P. Leaf, editor of The Tribuna, a Danbury multi-cultural newspaper, said she attended the rally to support people who wanted to get in line to earn citizenship but couldn't, because the immigration system is broken. "There is no line," Leaf said.

Ingrid Alvarez-DiMarzo, executive director of the Hispanic Center of Greater Danbury, organized Tuesday's event. Alvarez-DiMarzo said students who want to go to college should be given scholarships and other incentives, whether they are legal or undocumented. Those students are the human capital that must be trained to work and lead in the future, Alvarez-DiMarzo said.
