Danbury Woman Left Scene After Crashing Into Stop Sign: Newtown Police
The accused allegedly ran over a stop sign on Birch Hill Road Saturday evening.

NEWTOWN, CT — A Danbury woman was arrested for evading the scene of a crash Saturday evening after police say she struck a stop sign. Maria T. Matos, 59, of Danbury was driving west on Birch Hill Road when she went off the westbound shoulder and hit a stop sign. Police say Matos continued to drive after changing a tire that was damaged during the crash.
There were three passengers in the car at the time of the crash, and no injuries were reported. Matos told police another car stopped suddenly before her and she had nowhere to go, so she swerved to avoid it.
The car was found disabled in Bethel, police say. The car had ran over the stop sign, according to police.
