Ex-Danbury Teacher Acquitted on All Charges of Having Sex with Student: Report

Authorities said Kayla Mooney, a former first year physics teacher at Danbury High School, had sex with her then 17-year-old student.

Danbury, CT — A former Danbury High School science teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with one of her students has been acquitted on all charges, according to a report on The News Times.

Kayla Mooney, 25, was arrested on March 31, 2015 after turning herself in on an active arrest warrant for sexual assault, according to a release sent to Patch from the Danbury Police Department. She was also charged with distributing alcohol to a minor. She was fired two months later for failing to maintain her certification.

A jury deliberated for almost two hours, the paper reported, and delivered their verdict just before 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to The News Times, Mooney was accused of having sex with a 17-year-old male student twice and giving him vodka. The investigation was conducted by the Danbury Police Department Special Investigation Unit after the incident was reported by Danbury High School administrators on Feb. 10, 2015. Mooney, who was a first-year science teacher at the school, was charged with three Class C felonies for the alleged sexual assault and one Class E felony for allegedly delivering liquor to a minor, court records show.
