Major Supermarket To Open At Former Rite Aid Site In Danbury

The new supermarket on Germantown Road in Danbury will create 30 jobs, officials predict.

DANBURY, CT — Key Food, a community-based supermarket chain, will open a new store at the former Rite Aid location on Germantown Road, city officials announced.

Mayor Roberto Alves said the store, led by owner Anthony Pena, is expected to create more than 30 jobs while expanding shopping options for residents.

“We’re excited to welcome Anthony and Key Food to Danbury,” Alves said. “We recognize the investment he’s making, and look forward to seeing this vibrant market … expand shopping options for the neighborhood.”

The supermarket will feature fresh produce, bakery items, deli selections and groceries. Pena said his goal is to provide “fresh, quality products and exceptional service” in a welcoming environment.

Key Food Stores Co-Operative, Inc., founded in Brooklyn in 1937, operates more than 450 member-owned grocery stores across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic. The Danbury store will be the cooperative’s first in the city.

CEO Dean Janeway said the opening reflects the company’s mission of offering trusted neighborhood shopping. Alves thanked the Hawley family, property owners, for their work in securing a tenant for the site.

The store is expected to open in the coming months following completion of the permitting process.
