WCSU Announces Upcoming Events

The university in Danbury has a full calendar of events throughout the upcoming months.

DANBURY, CT - Western Connecticut State University has announced a complete lineup of events to take place throughout October and November:

October 1: Weather Conference: WCSU will host the Tri-State Weather Conference from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 125 of the Science Building on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The purpose of the conference is to enhance education, professional development and communication among private and public sector meteorologists, researchers, educators, students, emergency management officials and weather enthusiasts. October 4 & 5: Silent Witness Initiative: WCSU and The Women’s Center of Greater Danbury will host “The Silent Witness Initiative” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4, in the Student Center on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury, and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5, in the Campus Center on the Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. The Silent Witness Initiative honors the lives of domestic violence homicide victims through family support, community connections and advocacy for change. Many men and women die each year in acts of domestic violence and each one has a story. The event will share and honor the stories of Connecticut residents who have lost their lives to acts of domestic and dating violence. It will be free and the public is invited. October 4 & 5: Study-Abroad Information Session: WCSU will present information about summer study abroad opportunities in Spain at 12:30 p.m. in Warner Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The study abroad program allows students to earn six credits in just four weeks while being completely immersed in Spanish language and culture for four weeks in Malaga, Madrid and Marbella, Spain. October 4: Holistic and Integrative Health Initiatives Panel: The WCSU Institute for Holistic Health Studies will host “Holistic and Integrative Health Initiatives: Part Two,” a panel discussion about alternative approaches to health and wellness, at 7 p.m. in Room 127 of White Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Panelists will include: Naturopathic Physician Dr. Shawn Carney, Chiropractor Dr. Brian Applebee, Osteopathic Physician Dr. David Johnston and Integrative & Functional Medicine Practitioner Dr. Tama Sachs. October 9: New England Aquarium-Whale Watch: The Kathwari Honors Program will host a trip to Boston that will include a visit to the New England Aquarium, a whale watch and free time in the city. The bus will depart from the shuttle stop across from the Honors House at 8 a.m. and will return at 8 p.m. Tickets will be $56 for students and $99 for the public. October 11: Yoga Meditation Series: The Institute for Holistic Health Studies at WCSU will host a series of free meditation classes, “Sahaja Yoga Meditation,” at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month in Room 103 of Warner Hall on the WCSU Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Sahaja Yoga Meditation is a simple yet profound guided meditation with easy to do hand movements all done while sitting in the comfort of a chair. Sahaja Yoga Meditation, founded by Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, is practiced in more than 100 countries. The purpose of this meditation is to awaken kundalini energy to create a state of thoughtless awareness. The benefits of this meditation include inner peace, happiness, clarity, improved focus, stress reduction, relaxation and improved physical health. The class will be conducted by Jesse Rovero. October 12: Environmental Justice in El Salvador Lecture: The WCSU Department of Social Sciences and the Office of Diversity & Equity will present “Free Trade, Toxic Gold and Sugar Monopolies: The Struggle for Environmental Justice in El Salvador” at 9:25 a.m. in Warner Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Community organizer Zulma Tobar and social worker Carly Roach will discuss their experiences working to help El Salvador’s local communities in the struggle against global corporations. October 12: Wellness Wednesday Workshop: As part of the ongoing Wellness Wednesday program on campus, there will be a workshop on “Sleep Issues” with Dr. Michael Murphy at 12:30 p.m. in Room 127 of White Hall on the WCSU Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Chiropractic treatment for back pain and headaches is only the tip of the iceberg. Good health also involves nutrition, exercise, good sleep habits and a positive lifestyle. October 14: Permaculture Garden Fundraising Dinner: The Jane Goodall Center for Excellence in Environmental Studies (JGC) at WCSU will host a dinner to feast on the fruits from the Permaculture Garden from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Campus Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. The “Dinner in a Bite” event is a fundraiser in support of the JGC Permaculture Garden Project. Tickets are $50 per person and the public is invited. October 15 & 16: Foundations of Narrative Health Coaching: Teleosis Institute, in partnership with the Institute for Holistic Health Studies at WCSU, will host “Foundations of Narrative Health Coaching,” a two-day workshop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 127 of White Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Narrative Health Coaching offers an integrated approach to clarifying and attaining desired client outcomes. The workshop will be led by Teleosis Institute Creative Director Reggie Marra, a registered mentor coach and phone coach. October 15: Ceramics Workshop: Ceramics Instructor Jurg Lanzrein will offer a one-day ceramics workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Room 012 of White Hall on the WCSU Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. The workshop will be open to all levels of experience. Participants will learn to produce three functional ceramic pieces using pigmented colored clays to inlay a design on a white background. All materials will be included. After participants complete their artwork on plates, platters and bowls, they will be finished by the instructor and assistant with a clear glaze and fired. They will be ready to take home in about three weeks. The workshop fee is $150. Only eight seats are available; register in advance here. The registration deadline is Wednesday, October 12.

October 31: Fundraising Breakfast: The WCSU Women’s Basketball Tip-Off Breakfast will be from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. in the Ballroom of the Westside Campus Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. The public is invited. There will be no admission charge, but participants will be encouraged to make “tip” donations. This is the annual fundraiser for the women’s basketball team.
