DARIEN, CT — The Darien Planning & Zoning Commission is expected to hold a public hearing soon on the prohibition of vape shops, and ear piercing and tattoo parlors in town.

Commission Chair Stephen Olvany went before the town's Operations Planning Committee on May 20 and spoke briefly about the upcoming meeting.

Assistant Director of Planning & Zoning Fred Doneit told Patch the prohibition proposal will be heard during the June 3 Planning & Zoning Commission meeting.

"One of the things we have talked about is, in our town, if it's not on an approved list, then it either gets on the approved list or there are certain things in town that are prohibited in town," Olvany told the Operations Planning Committee. "At our next meeting, we're going to have a public hearing to prohibit vape shops, ear piercing and tattoo parlors in town. Some of those things are top of mind of other people, but we're trying to plan ahead and make sure what Darien wants to have inside Darien is what Darien gets."

The May 20 Planning Operations Committee is available to view on demand on Darien TV79.

Several months ago, Darien prohibited cannabis establishments from opening in town, Olvany noted.

The Planning & Zoning Commission also reviewed an application this past winter that sought to open up a piercing studio, with a jewelry retail component, at 883 Boston Post Road in the CBD Zone.

In subsequent deliberations on Jan. 28, according to meeting minutes, Olvany "did not believe that the overall proposal is consistent with downtown," adding that the Commission had not allowed acupuncture services within the CBD Zone.

Commissioner Adam Balgach agreed with Olvany, meeting minutes say, and "stated that the use is not appropriate for a first floor space in downtown."

The Commission also had concerns with parking at the proposed site.

The application was later withdrawn in February.

Patch reached out to Olvany on Thursday for comment on the upcoming public hearing but did not immediately hear back.
