DARIEN, CT — All town employees and visitors to Darien Town Hall are required to wear a mask, regardless of their coronavirus vaccination status, beginning Monday.

According to the town's Facebook page, the decision was made due to Fairfield County now being an "area of substantial transmission" of the coronavirus.

First Selectman Jayme Stevenson said Monday the decision was made out of an abundance of caution as the more infectious delta variant of the coronavirus continues to spike across the U.S.

"We have taken this action out of an abundance of caution given the current status of 'significant transmission' in Fairfield County," Stevenson said in an email, "and the fact that the highly transmissible Delta variant is the predominant variant present in [Connecticut]."

Stevenson also noted the Delta variant can spread to folks who have already received a coronavirus vaccination.

"Mask wearing in indoor public spaces, regardless of vaccine status," Stevenson said, "is a recommendation from [the state Department of Public Health] at this time."

This week, Gov. Ned Lamont doubled down on leaving the decision for business patrons to mask up in the hands of local business owners after announcing the daily coronavirus positivity rate for the state climbed above 3 percent over the weekend.

Lamont also noted schools in Connecticut will open safely again this fall but gave no indication what guidance the state would be providing districts regarding mask wearing or other coronavirus mitigation protocols.
