Stephen Colbert's Sister Wins SC Primary for Congress

Elizabeth "Lulu" Colbert Busch walked away with the Democratic nomination for the S.C. First Congressional District seat Tuesday.

Both the Associated Press and CNN called the primary in Colbert Busch's favor at 8:30 p.m.

Her brother, comedian Stephen Colbert, had campaigned for her during the election.

In speaking to supporters on Tuesday night, Colbert Busch mentioned that South Carolina had only sent two women to Washington, D.C., before.

"Perhaps that is why the voices of thousands of mothers and fathers living paycheck to paycheck are often drowned out by other priorities and agendas," she said. "When I was a young, single mother I personally knew that feeling. I am ready to speak up for those voices.”

Colbert Busch a longtime Clemson University employee referred to as the school's "corporate matchmaker," Colbert Busch's ability to raise money and the name recognition she received from having a brother with a popular late-night fake news program on Comedy Central made her the early favorite in the race to fill now Sen. Tim Scott's old Congressional seat.

Two of the four Democratic candidates who initially filed to run for the seat pulled out early in the campaign and lined up behind Colbert Busch, essentially uniting District 1 Democrats behind her.

Her remaining opponent Ben Frasier has appeared on SC1 ballot 10 times in the past two decades also filed for the seat, but prominent Democrats like Rep. Jim Clyburn have floated the idea that Frazier was running as a spoiler candidate and Democratic activist Tyler Jones called him a Republican plant on Twitter.
