Agriculture Council Member Wanted in Middlefield

Middlefield is looking for someone to represent the town on the newly formed Regional Agriculture Council.

The council was created by the governing board of the Lower Connecticut River Valley Council of Governments, or River COG, which is made up of 17 towns including Middlefield and Durham.

"It's good for Middlefield," First Selectman JonΒ Brayshaw said. "Now we need to find someone who has an interest in farming who might want to serve Middlefield on this commission."

The following is a description of the role the chosen council member will play:

The objective of the Regional Council is to support farming in the 17 municipalities and promote agriculture-friendly land use and municipal policies. Goals of the Regional Council will partner with those of municipal commissions, and will include: serving as an information and education conduit between farmers, municipal boards and commissions, elected officials, nonprofit agencies, and civic organizations; providing guidance and review of municipal land use regulations related to agriculture; providing guidance and information regarding agriculturally related tax programs and policies; assisting with conflict resolution of agriculturally related issues; and identifying economic opportunities for towns and farmers.Β

The Agricultural Council will be operated through the RiverCOG located in Essex, CT. The COG will be hosting the meetings and will be a resource for grants, etc. that may not be available to individual towns. The Council will regionalize the resources and make for a more efficient body to focus on the opportunities for farming in the region.Β
