Board of Education Considers Breathalyzer Policy
School officials plan to research the idea of requiring students to perform sobriety tests at school functions, such as prom.

School officials are in the early stages of considering the use of breathalyzers within the school district in an apparent effort to discourage underage drinking.
At Wednesday's Board of Education meeting, the topic was briefly discussed by members of the board's policy committee.
"We're going to do some research here," said Norm Hicks, the committee's chairman.
Hicks said the committeeΒ had been provided a copy of a breathalyzer policy adopted by Stratford Public Schools in 2010Β by Superintendent Susan Viccaro, who first brought the issue to the committee's attention last monthΒ following a request by high school administrators that a breathalyzerΒ policy be considered.

According to the minutes of an April 29 meeting, committee members agreed that a thorough effort should be made in considering such a policy.
The meeting came less than a month after seven students were disciplined for showing up to a semi-formal dance at Coginchaug High School intoxicated and eight others were arrested for possession of alcohol by a minor.
A comprehensive effort to prevent underage drinking and warn students of the dangers of substance abuse has been waged this week ahead of tonight's prom which will be held at the Glastonbury Country Club.
Several school districts throughout the state have adopted breathalyzer policies, including Regional School District's 10 and 14.
