Firefighters Test New Fire Pond

Monday night is drill night for Middlefield volunteer firefighters.

And this week a crew of firefighters gathered at the pond at Country Flower Farms to test the fire company's newest fire pond.

Firefighters rely on such ponds to provide trucks with water in the event of a fire and the fire company recently worked with nursery owner Paul Schatzman to build a dry pump along Baileyville Road.

"It's going to become very important when the lake is down," said fire chief Pete Tyc. "When they do the drawdown it's really going to limit us."

Tyc said the pond stores about one-million gallons and that it takes about three minutes for a truck to fill to capacity.
