At a May 1 meeting, Durham Planning and Zoning Commission chairman Richard Eriksen announced that an agreement had been reached between the commission, Regional School District 13 and DurhamΒ resident Karen Cheyney over the installation of bathroom facilities at the athletic complex at Coginchaug High School.
The new agreement essentially eliminates a provision requiring the school district to complete a bathroom facility by a deadline. Instead, the new stipulated agreementΒ requires that restrooms be built before new lighting is installed at the complex.
In 2009, Cheyney sued the school district and the Planning and Zoning Commission in an effort to stop the athletic complex from being built. The resulting settlement requiredΒ construction of permanent bathroom facilities.
School officials initially faced an April 2014 deadline to complete bathroom construction but in FebruaryΒ Cheyney proposed makingΒ changes to the stipulated agreement to relieve pressure on the school district'sΒ budget.
The actual scopeΒ of the project, as well as the costs remain under consideration.
