Police Investigating Cemetery Thefts in Middlefield
Police say $5,000 worth of decorative vases have been stolen from St. Sebastian's Cemetery in the past week.

Thieves have stolen thousands of dollars worth of decorative vases from a Middlefield cemetery, according to state police.
Sgt. Sal Calvo said police are investigating the theft of about $5,000 worth of granite vases from St. Sebastian's Cemetery, located at 75 Meriden Road, near the Middlefield/Middletown border.

"This is a first for us," Calvo said.
The decorative vases are between 12-18 inches high and are used to place flowers or plants at gravesites. The vases began disappearing on March 20, Calvo said.

Police are asking anyone from the community who may visit the cemetery to report any suspicious activity and to be aware of the thefts.
Calvo said its possible the vases, which can be worth between $500 to $1,500, are being resold at flea markets or other venues.
