Referendum To Upgrade Middlefield's Lyman Elementary School Fails
Residents voted not to spend $7.5 million on renovating the building, which the board of education previously recommended should close.

DURHAM-MIDDLEFIELD, CT β Regional School District No. 13 will not spend $7.5 million on renovations and improvements to John Lyman Elementary School, as voters turned the proposal down in a recent referendum.
A total of 1,243 votes were cast in Tuesday's referendum: 293 votes in favor, and 950 votes in opposition.
Middlefield voters slightly favored the upgrades (voting 194 in favor to 187 opposed), though Durham voters overwhelmingly voted them down (99 yes votes to 763 no votes).

Regional School District 13 has said Lyman School needs several improvements: among them, repairs to driveways, parking areas and playgrounds; interior improvements to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act; replacement of hot water circulating pumps; a fire sprinkler system expansion and more, the Record-Journal reported.
In fact, in 2021 the Board of Education recommended closing the building, the newspaper reported.
