The Bobolink families would like to thank Durham for their hospitality. We have come from Argentina to raise our families on White’s Farm. We have raised our young there for generations. Thank you for not cutting the hay- it’s our habitat. We build our nests in the field, we gather food for our young, we sing and practice flying soaring from perch to perch. Many of our habitats have been destroyed so we are grateful to Durham for keeping ours safe.
As we get ready to fly back to Argentina for the winter (we are molting in readiness so the males especially look a bit scruffy at the moment) we greatly appreciate that you did not mow/hay the field at White’s Farm. The field might not look like much to you, but it provides a wonderful smorgasbord of insects and seeds to make our young ones strong for the flight back as well as perches and protection for our new fliers. This year there are more of us than ever thanks to this wonderful field of goodies.
We will be well out of your way in time for the Durham Fair. And will be back again after our long flight back from Argentina in our glorious mating finery to sing and welcome spring back to Durham next year.
