"Big Steve" and Joe Carfora Running for Mayor; How About Maturo?

It is now April and the election is only six months away; both Republican "Big Steve" Tracey and Democrat Joe Carfora are in; Mayor Maturo?

EAST HAVEN, CT - With last week's announcement from 3rd District Councilman Joseph Carfora that he is running for mayor from the Democratic side that means there are now two candidates in the race.

A month ago Republican "Big Steve" Tracey said he, too, would be running for mayor.

There is another big name who has yet to make a decision that will have a big impact on how the election, which is only six months away, plays out.

That is nine-time Republican incumbent Mayor Joseph Maturo, Jr.

Maturo said weeks ago in a statement that he would be making a decison on whether to seek a record-breaking 10th term "in a matter of days."

But weeks have passed and no word from Maturo. That’s a bit unusual in that two years ago when Maturo ran for a ninth term in 2017 he announced in late January.

Asked by Patch about that this past weekend, Maturo had only this to say about whether he's reached a decision.

"Not yet."
