"Today, I had the pleasure of meeting and listening to the concerns of our Stop & Shop workers in East Haven who are currently on strike due to breakdowns with contract negotiations. After speaking to numerous picketers, one common theme kept resonating in my mind - corporate greed.

"Last year, Stop & Shop netted over $2 billion. While I certainly do not begrudge any business trying to maximize their profits, it seems to me that more of those profits should be shared with the good workers and their families that made it possible to get there.

"The employees are paying through the nose for medical benefits with high deductibles and co pays. They are also looking to take away numerous other benefits. Stop & Shop could and should do better for them.

"Stop & Shop should do the right thing and negotiate a fair union contract for it's workers that is conducive to today's economic times. This present status of affairs is beneficial to neither party.

"The workers and their families are now sacrificing their pays while the stores are losing 70-80 million dollars a day in product spoilage and expiration which will be wasted and could be used to feeding all families. I sincerely hope it gets resolved soon. "
