“East Haven became eligible for this program due to 58% students receiving free or reduced lunches. The board also realizes the hardship for families who may not qualify yet still have a financial hardship. East Haven will be reimbursed by the State/Federal government at 80% free and 20% at a reduced rate.
“As for the financial impact on our district, it should be noted that it has been projected that the board may be facing a $19,000 cost for this initiative to offset the reduced rate; in saying that I will also say that at this point in the year the district is currently expecting a $30,000 cost by the end of the school year for the cheese sandwich option made available to students who can not afford lunch, yet may not have previously qualified.
