East Haven Official Questions Whether Roads Safe For School Buses

Carfora: "Keeping our roads safe and passable for early morning bus runs and commutes is mandatory."

EAST HAVEN, CT -An East Haven Town Council member is questioning whether officials did enough Friday morning to ensure the roads were safe for school buses to travel.

On his Facebook page, 3rd District Town Councilman Joseph Carfora said:

“This morning I have had a number of phone calls concerning road conditions in the 3rd District, including one related to a school bus sliding off the road - which I understand resulted in no injuries.

“I intend to speak with my fellow Town Council members regarding these concerns so that we can make efforts to determine what the Mayor’s protocol is to get our public work trucks on the road.

“A consistent and professional assessment of these snow situations is required. Keeping our roads safe and passable for early morning bus runs and commutes is mandatory.”

Carfora added: “While I understand that our shoreline neighbors have different topography; and snow accumulations do differ, it does appear that they are willing to get trucks on the road much earlier.

“Clearly they are making the effort to make sure that the roads aren’t the reasons for school delays, but most importantly for safe passage and commutes."

And East Haven parent, who sent her 6-year-old son to elementary school on Friday morning, also questioned the safety of the town's roads for buses to travel.

"The bus that picked up my son was sliding as it left the stop," said Elizabeth Conte. "My whole street was a patch of ice. It wasn't until 9 o'clock that the plows finally came through."

Conte said she fell herself on Bradley Street while just walking her kid to the bus stop.

"They should have had a 90-minute delay," Conte said.

Patch reached out to School Superintendent Erica Forti for comment, but has not heard back.
