EAST HAVEN, CT — A New Jersey man was arrested Friday night after a domestic violence incident reported in East Haven escalated into an assault on multiple officers, according to police.

In a news release, Police Capt. Joseph Murgo said officers responded to a report of an unwanted person at a home on Highland Avenue around 5:30 p.m.

When officers arrived, they tried to arrest Jose Valentin Duran-Castillo, 41, of Phillipsburg, N.J., however he became combative and resisted, according to Murgo.

A woman reported Duran-Castillo arrived at her home and tried to "engage in an altercation with multiple people at the residence." She also said Duran-Castillo refused to leave despite repeated requests to do so, Murgo said.

Duran-Castillo was eventually subdued and taken to St. Raphael's Hospital in New Haven for evaluation, where he continued to resist and assaulted an additional officer, according to Murgo.

The officers sustained minor injuries during the altercations, Murgo said.

Duran was charged with criminal violation of a protective order, first-degree criminal trespass, second-degree breach of peace, interfering with an officer and four counts of assault of public safety personnel.

Duran was held on a $250,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court Monday, according to Murgo.
