Obituary: Michael J. Cox, 70, of East Haven
A longshoreman, he enjoyed betting on horses, crabbing, Atlantic City trips to see friends, and never missed a Western or $10 lottery bet.
Michael J. Cox 70 of East Haven passed away on May 7, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was born October 12, 1953 in New Haven, to the late Elwood “Babe” Cox and Joan (Toohey) Cox. Michael is survived by his mother, Joan and six of his siblings; Patricia Cox of East Haven, Elaine Thomas of Torrance CA, Joan Lucas of East Haven, Ellen Clements (Robert) of Villas, NJ, Frances Arsenault (widow of Ricky Arsenault) and Maureen Monaghan (Michael) of Guilford. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews; Bazin Girma, Enderyas Girma, Megan Lucas, Richard Sgrignari (Mike), Lauren Clements, Maggie Kaelble (Sean), Sean Monaghan and Kelsey (Dave) Gorski, five great nieces and nephews, Shiloh Girma, Patrick Harrison, Bradley Harrison, Liam Harrison and Parker Kaelble. He was predeceased by his father, Elwood and his brother Thomas S. Cox.
Michael worked for many years for US Steel in New Haven until its closing, and then went on to become a Longshoreman for New Haven Terminal until his retirement. Michael loved betting on the horses, there was no time like springtime when Mountaineer Race Track opened for the season. He enjoyed spending time with friends, going crabbing, and generously shared his catch with many people. He also enjoyed his trips to New Jersey to see his friends Louie and Mary and spending a few days in Atlantic City. There wasn’t a day that went by without him putting a straight $10.00 bet on his 4-digit number. There hasn’t been an old western movie or TV series that he hasn’t watched at least 10 times. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Family will receive friends at the Clancy-Palumbo Funeral Home (Clancy Funeral Home), 43 Kirkham Ave., East Haven on Saturday May 11, 2024, from 9 to 10:30 A.M at which time his funeral procession will leave for an 11 A.M. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Pio of Pietrelcina Parish at the Church of St. Vincent de Paul, 80 Taylor Ave., East Haven with Committal to follow at St. Agnes Cemetery, Branford.
