EAST HAVEN, CT — In late February, neighbors became concerned that dogs may have been abandoned by nearby apartment dwellers, residents who had not been seen in many days.

Reported to East Haven Animal Control, Officers Vece and Higgins responded to do a welfare check. Out of an abundance of caution and due to the possibility that an owner may have been inside and perhaps injured, both East Haven police and firefighters assisted with the call, officials said.

Officers and firefighters verified there was no one inside. No humans anyway.

Instead, what was found were two dogs and a cat, with the "terrified dogs living in feces and urine covered floors with only a ripped open bag of dog food and no water or any clean place to lay down."

Animal Control officials confirmed that "charges are pending for the people responsible."

"We are very happy to report we were given custody by the court and all three animals are doing well," an animal shelter Facebook post reads.

"One of the dogs, who we have now named Vito, was severely matted with over grown nails," it was noted. "But he's now all groomed and doing well thanks to the awesome team at Mount Carmel Veterinary Hospital."

The animals, including Tuxedo cat Darla, will be officially up for adoption next week after their neuters are complete.

The Shelter is hoping folks that are able to donate towards their medical care.

"It would be greatly appreciated," the post reads. "Donations can be mailed in. We are currently working on setting up a Venmo for future donations."
