Terminal Fuel Farm Fire Under Control At East Haven/New Haven Border

EAST HAVEN/NEW HAVEN, CT — A fire at the 119 Frontage Road fuel tank farm, part of New Haven Terminal Inc. on the border of East Haven and New Haven, is under control with a potential crisis averted by quick response from East Haven and New Haven fire departments, officials confirmed for Patch.

Early Wednesday afternoon, firefighters responded to the area and "all emergency shutdown systems" were put in place "to ensure no other issues," New Haven Emergency Operations director Rick Fontana said.

Firefighters from East Haven, New Haven, Guilford, and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection are on the scene.

Fontana said that New Haven provided mutual aid as the fire was in the farm on the East Haven side, sending two engines, a foam unit as well as a Deputy Chief and Special Operations Command Unit. and the mutual aid provided."

"(Firefighters) averted a pretty significant incident," Fontana said, adding, "It was a good response by East Haven, and the mutual aid provided."

Fontana said the "fire was contained to a piping and a pump area from the large tanks to the distribution rack."

He said it's being "contained using water and foam." He said there are no injuries to report.

According to New Haven Terminal Inc., the facility is around one mile to the east/northeast of New Haven harbor. The East Haven/New Haven town line bisects the property from north to south. It notes that "bulk petroleum product moves into and out of the terminal via."

A 63-acre site, half is in New Haven and half in East Haven, where the tank farm is. On the site there are 15 above-ground storage tanks which range in size and total 1,755,019 bbls, or 73,710,796 gallons.
