The East Haven High School Class of 2013, all 197 of them, marched to the traditional music of "Pomp and Circumstance" and received their diplomas on the evening of June 26.
Under a cloudy sky, students, faculty, parents, friends and family all reminisced about the last four years of school as the graduates embarked on a new chapter in their lives.
There were the traditional speeches, as well:
"We did it!" said Class salutatorian Elise Tomasello. "Like on our birthdays, today we are the most important people in the world."
Tomasello spoke about the many memories she and others will cherish from their days at EHHS, especially of their classmates. "Our close friends teach us to trust and be trustworthy."
Superintendent of Schools Anthony Serio got right to the point, telling the graduates that "to be successful in life, you need to be employed."
"Continue to strive for excellence, never compromise your values and what you believe in," he added.
East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo, Jr., asked each of the graduates to stand up, turn around, and "applaud the people behind you who have supported you all these years."
His advice? When the time comes for you to leave home, whether for college or a job, remember your parents, grandparents and siblings.
"Call them once a week and tell them you love them," he said.
