The Ellington Historical Society invites the community to step back in time&mdash;and enjoy a touch of Victorian-era drama&mdash;with two engaging programs taking place this week at the Hall Memorial Library and the Nellie McKnight Museum. Both events offer unique perspectives on 19th-century life, paired with a can&rsquo;t-miss final chance to shop for the holidays in the museum&rsquo;s Mercantile and Holiday Boutique.
Wednesday December 17th, 6:30 at the <a href="https://hallmemoriallibrary.libcal.com/event/15637510" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Hall Memorial Library</a>, History comes alive with The Diary of an Ellington School Boy, 1862, a fascinating program drawn from the firsthand writings of a local student during the Civil War era. Through his daily observations, audiences will gain rare insight into school life, family routines, and the impact of national events on a small Connecticut farming community. The program offers an intimate glimpse into Ellington&rsquo;s past through the eyes of a young resident living in extraordinary times.
Friday December 19th, 6:30 at the Nellie McKnight Museum, 70 Main St. , the Society presents An Evening with Humbug: Sarah Whelan Brings Scrooge&rsquo;s Untold Story to Life. In this dramatic and thought-provoking performance, Whelan explores the backstory of Ebenezer Scrooge, revealing the experiences and choices that shaped Dickens&rsquo; most infamous character. Blending history, literature, and theatrical storytelling, the evening promises to be both entertaining and reflective, perfect for the holiday season.
Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the museum&rsquo;s Mercantile Holiday Sale, open Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Shoppers will find 50% off most items, with exclusions for local artisan wares, books, and honey. The popular Holiday Boutique returns with a festive favorite: fill a bag for just $10. It&rsquo;s the last chance before Christmas to pick up unique gifts while supporting the Ellington Historical Society.

Join us at the Nellie McKnight Museum, 70 Main ST. Ellington&nbsp;on Friday, December 19th at 6:30 p.m. for a captivating book reading with local author Sarah Whelan, featuring her richly imagined novel Humbug: Scrooge Before the Ghosts. Set within the beautifully decorated 1812 house, this event invites guests to explore the untold story of Ebenezer Scrooge long before the fateful night portrayed in A Christmas Carol.
In Humbug, Whelan delves deep into Scrooge&rsquo;s past&mdash;his passionate love affair with Jacob Marley, the heartbreaking losses that shaped him, and the crushing responsibilities that pushed him toward the cold, solitary life we think we know so well. Far from a simple miser, Scrooge emerges as a complex man: a doting uncle, beloved brother, successful businessman, and someone struggling to live authentically despite the repressive expectations of Victorian society. His journey is filled with sorrow, hard choices, resilience, love, and moments of unexpected joy. As Scrooge himself reflects, &ldquo;How delightfully queer life is.&rdquo;

Ellington Historical Society presents "The Diary of an Ellington School Boy 1862"

The Somers Department. of Veterans Affairs invites military veterans and their guests&nbsp;to a monthly &ldquo;Coffee House&rdquo; speaking series held at Somers Town Hall. These morning gatherings provide a welcoming space for learning, connection, and hearing from guest speakers on topics that support and uplift our veteran community. Events run from January through October on the last Saturday of each month, with a special November session on the second Saturday of the month. Join us from 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM for coffee, conversation, and meaningful dialogue.

The Ellington Economic Development Commission encourages you to support local businesses and participate in this year&rsquo;s annual buy local campaign - Shop Ellington 2025. The event kicks off on Friday, November 28 and runs through Sunday, December 14. During the event, patrons will earn Shop Ellington bingo stickers by visiting participating businesses and may enter qualifying bingo cards in a raffle prize drawing (eight $25 pre-paid gift cards). A bingo card with at least one row or column filled with Shop Ellington stickers is eligible to enter the raffle drawing &ndash; there&rsquo;s no maximum number of bingo cards that may be entered.
