MANCHESTER, CT — "If there's something weird and it don't look good, who you gonna call?" For four decades, the answer has been "Ghostbusters!" but if that something weird is cancer, then the call in the next two days should be to the Funny Bone Comedy Club, to order tickets for a special movie-themed evening aiding a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children with cancer.

The fifth annual Bust Out the Cancer benefit comedy show is slated for Wednesday, Oct. 23. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the show beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is $25, but a special promo code, "ten," enables supporters to obtain tickets for just $10 each. Tickets and more information may be obtained here.

During the show, some of the top comedians in the area entertain while dressed up as characters from the film, which had starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis. The comedy club is restricted to ages 18 and over.

The event started in 2020 when comedian Matt Heath put together a benefit comedy show on behalf of his comedian friend, Enfield resident Jon James, who was diagnosed with two cancers at the same time. All proceeds from the event went towards helping James in his fight, and due to his being a huge fan of the "Ghostbusters" franchise, Heath came up with the idea to have the comedians dress up as characters, seeing as how the show was very close to Halloween.

Every October since then, the Bust Out the Cancer Benefit Comedy Show returns to raise money to fight cancer. This year's beneficiary is The Sunshine Kids, a group established in 1982 committed to providing positive group activities and emotional support for young cancer patients. The Sunshine Kids provide a variety of programs and events, free of charge, for children receiving cancer treatment in hospitals across North America.

The evening is full of promise for a lot of laughs, a few tears and some great raffle prizes. To participate in the battle against this awful disease, follow the words immortalized on film by Dr. Peter Venkman (Murray): "We came! We saw! We kicked its ass!"
