Strong Storm Leads To Flood Warning For Parts Of Northern CT: NWS

A flash flood warning has been issued for parts of northern Connecticut. Here are the new details.

NORTHERN CONNECTICUT — The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for northwestern sections of Hartford County until 5:30 p.m.

"At 248 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area," the weather service said. "Between 2 and 3 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly."

IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas, according to the weather service.

A flood watch remains in effect from Sunday night through Tuesday morning, the weather service said.

* IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
"Several rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expect tonight into Monday night," the weather service said. "Storm total rainfall of 2 to 4 inches is expected across the watch area, but localized amounts in excess of 5 inches are possible especially where thunderstorms develop and move over the same areas. Thunderstorms will have the potential to produce rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, which will elevate the risk of urban and street flooding along with localized flash flooding. The greatest risk for storms will be across northern Connecticut, western and central Massachusetts."

This Afternoon: Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Cloudy, with a high near 84. South wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms likely before midnight, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between midnight and 1am, then showers after 1am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Areas of fog after midnight. Low around 70. Southeast wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Monday: Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 11am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Areas of fog before 1pm. High near 79. East wind 5 to 8 mph becoming light and variable in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Monday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 7pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 7pm and 4am, then a slight chance of showers after 4am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 66. West wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tuesday: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 10am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 87. Northwest wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
