"Upon arrival, officers learned that a physical altercation had taken place in the upstairs master bedroom between the husband and wife," police said in a release Monday.

During the struggle, the female victim sustained significant head trauma believed to be caused by a blunt object, wrote the EPD.

The male suspect then discharged at least one round from what appears to be a shotgun within the bedroom, police said.

According to police, the male suspect subsequently obtained a second firearm, identified as a rifle.

Police said a physical altercation then occurred between the suspect and one of the adult sons present in the residence.

During this struggle, police said the rifle was discharged twice.

No injuries have been reported as a result of the gunfire, police said.

The female victim was transported to Baystate Medical Center for treatment of head trauma.

The male suspect was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Hartford with an apparent partial finger amputation.

He has been treated, released by the hospital, charged, and remains in police custody, police said.

A search warrant was prepared for the residence, and this investigation continues, according to police.
