LETTER: Real Heroism In the Most Quiet of Packages
Opinions expressed are those of the letter writer and do not necessarily reflect the views of Patch Media.

My name is Winona Kress. I grew up in Enfield and now live in New York City. I try to keep up with the goings on of home thanks to Patch - and through my parents, who still live in the house where I grew up. I saw your article about the house fire at 21 Quaker Lane and thought I would share an extra bit of insight to the event.
My parents live next door at 19 Quaker Lane - have for over 40 years - and have been friends with the elderly lady who lives at 21 Quaker for many years. On the morning of Friday the 14th, one of the residents of 21 Quaker came racing over to my parents' home to tell them the house was on fire. My mother's first concern was the whereabouts of our elderly friend - and was told that she was still inside the house. My mother immediately ran to the house, forced her way through the back door, and helped our friend escape the fire - all before emergency services arrived.
While my mother has a very strong personality, she has never been the type of person to seek attention or put herself on display. So, I write this with a bit of hesitation, but I felt the need to share her selflessness towards others (and this is but one, rather exceptional example).

Real heroism can come in the most quiet of packages.
I hope you and the ones you love have a beautiful Christmas. Life is so fragile and unpredictable. Savor every moment - and never pause to let those you love know that you do.
