Enfield Woman Killed In 2-Vehicle Crash On Route 5 [UPDATED]

ENFIELD, CT — A segment of Route 5 was closed to traffic for more than five hours as police investigated a fatal 2-vehicle collision near the junction of Enfield Street and South Road.

Police confirmed one person was killed in the crash, which took place around 1:40 p.m. directly in front of the Enfield Congregational Church. The victim, who a passenger in an SUV, has been identified as Patricia Carey, 62, of Enfield.

The driver of the SUV, a 63-year-old man from Enfield, was taken to Hartford Hospital with serious injuries. The operator of a pickup truck, a 27-year-old man from Somers, was treated for injuries at St. Francis Hospital, police said.

A witness to the crash, whose name is being withheld, told Patch he was driving directly behind the vehicles at the time of the collision.

"Horrific scene. Truck went airborne, sounded like a bomb went off," he said.

Photos of the scene were sent to Patch, but editors have decided not to publish them out of respect for the families of the people involved.

Police diverted southbound traffic on Route 5 through the Enfield High School driveway. Northbound travelers on Route 5 were detoured down Post Office Road, while westbound traffic on South Road was diverted down Phoenix Avenue.

The roads reopened around 7 p.m.
