New Phone Scam Involves Persons Purporting To Be Enfield Police Officers
Callers are spoofing the phone number of the Enfield Police Department and instructing victims to withdraw money, according to police.
ENFIELD, CT — Police are cautioning residents to be aware of a new phone scam involving persons spoofing the Enfield Police Department phone number to make it appear they are the police.
According to a social media post, in one instance, a resident was instructed to withdraw money from a bank in Springfield and pay an individual they were to meet in the city. When the resident did not meet the person as directed, she received multiple calls from 860-763-6400 (the Enfield Police Department’s phone number), threatening to arrest the resident for money laundering if she failed to follow through with meeting the person and paying them money as directed.
Police would never direct anyone to withdraw money, or purchase crypto or gift cards and pay a random individual. The Enfield Police Department only accepts cash, checks and money orders as forms of payment, and those payments can only be made at the Enfield Police Department.
