The southbound side of the highway is closed for nearly six miles due to a serious crash.

ENFIELD-EAST WINDSOR, CT — A portion of the southbound side of Interstate 91 extending nearly six miles in length is closed due to a serious crash, causing major traffic disruption in Enfield and East Windsor.
The highway is closed between exits 47 and 45. Police say the closure is impacting traffic on adjacent Route 5 as well, and motorists are advised to seek alternate routes.
UPDATE: At 7:50 p.m., southbound traffic on the interstate was jammed all the way back to Exit 49 near the Massachusetts border. Route 5 in Enfield was backed up for miles to the former Alcorn Elementary school. Route 190 was also at a standstill from the business district to the end of the Enfield-Suffield Veterans Bridge over the Connecticut River.
