A voice we need on the Board of Ed

Opinion

I’m writing as a proud resident of Enfield and a father. I don’t usually get involved in discussing local politics or writing letters, but I believe the upcoming elections are far too important to our community to not be active. As a parent of a local student, I have always been impressed with Enfield’s educators and their commitment to their students. However, I feel that our schools are at a crossroads and the decisions that we make now will have lasting ramifications.

Good schools start with experienced and compassionate educators. But those educators also need to be backed by leadership that truly understands their needs. That is why I’m supporting Kelsey McGuire-Bruce for the Board of Education. She isn't just a politician; she's someone who has been on the front lines of education and someone I am fortunate enough to have had as a teacher for my child. As an educator herself, Kelsey understands what happens in the classroom and what our teachers and students truly need. When speaking with her about her reason for running for the Board of Education, she said that she "can't sit back” and watch the community that she loves “fail our kids.” To me, that says everything. It shows that above all else, her priority is our children, and I am confident that she will work in their best interests.

Regardless of politics, I truly feel that most of us want what's best for our children, but I also believe that quality schools require strong, qualified leadership and, just as importantly, proper funding. We can't expect our schools and children to succeed if we don't give them the resources and leadership that they need. I believe Kelsey is running because she cares about our kids and our community and we need that kind of experienced, student-focused leadership on our Board of Education.
