ENFIELD, CT — An Enfield woman was held over the weekend on $100,000 bond following a Saturday morning incident in which she assaulted a state marshal with a hatchet, then spat on a police officer.
Elena Corning, 45, was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon, two counts of assault on public safety personnel, second-degree breach of peace, first-degree reckless endangerment, criminal attempt to commit first-degree assault on an elderly/other victim and second-degree assault on an elderly/other victim.
Police Chief Alaric Fox said officers were sent to a home on Washington Road at 8:37 a.m. Saturday upon a report of a male and female fighting with an ax. Upon arrival, police learned a Connecticut marshal was in the process of evicting Corning from the home, when she swung a hatchet at him. The marshal blocked the blow with his forearm, causing pain, but was able to restrain Corning until police took her in custody.

When attempting to place Corning into a cruiser, she spat in an officer’s face, and resisted arrest while pinned against the side of the vehicle, when her head struck the rear glass panel, causing the glass to break and causing an injury to her forehead. She was taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford for treatment and evaluation, Fox said.
