- The Ancient Order of Weeders in Essex made the news for its steadfast volunteer efforts which help to keep our small town beautiful and our community united. The Ancient Order of Weeders are a well-known group of senior citizens who spend one morning a week beautifying the Essex median. According to the WTNH.com article, they are always looking for more members and happy to add to their group. (WTNH.com)
- The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that about 1,300 people die each year nationally due to extremely hot weather, according to a CT Insider article. However, as Connecticut suffers through its second extended heatwave this summer, it is worth noting the state does not have a moratorium on warm weather utility shut-offs like the one that exists during the winter heating season. State Senator Norman Neddleman, D-Essex, co-chairman of the Connecticut legislature’s energy and technology committee, said he is open to considering legislation that would prohibit the shut-off electric service during periods of extreme heat. Mitch Gross, a spokesman for Eversource Energy, said the company has “voluntarily suspended residential disconnections during this current heatwave.” (CT Insider)

- Essex Library: "Check out this virtual book experience at the library! Scan the QR codes in the book to bring up the virtual and augmented reality app on your smartphone and explore supplemental scenes from the book." (Essex Library via Facebook)
- Town of Essex – Government: "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." — Dr. Seuss, from The Lorax. In 2015, we recycled and composted about 35% of our waste in Connecticut. That rate might seem impressive, however, it has remained relatively flat over the past decade. Connecticut still disposes of 2.4 million tons of trash annually. That's too much! We not only can do better, we must do better by transforming solid waste management into a materials economy that can create jobs through recycling.
Learn more about how we manage our waste in Connecticut and how to help us move toward our vision for even more waste reduction, reuse and recycling by visiting https://portal.ct.gov/.../ReduceReuseRecycle-Main-Page and https://www.essexct.gov/landfilltransfer-station.." (Town of Essex – Government via Facebook) - Tri-Town Youth Services Bureau: "The Rotary Club of Deep River is excited to be a part of this wonderful effort to get kids involved in STEM. Books appropriate for grades K-5 can be dropped off for collection at Edward Jones in Deep River (next to Dunkin Donuts)." (Tri-Town Youth Services Bureau via Facebook)
