  1. It's about that time! Time for the 40th annual Deep River Parks and Recreation Fishing Derby, which is set to take place on Saturday, May 13. Plan to come down and cast a line and try your luck at landing a rainbow trout! The derby is open to all area youth ages 5-15. The derby will be held rain or shine from 7:30 -9:30 am. at Plattwood Park. Online registration is open now. Day of registration begins at 7 a.m. Pre-register and save. Fees prior to May 13: individual anglers $5, family $10. Day of derby fees : angler $7, family $15. Prizes will be awarded to biggest catch in each of the three age categories.   2. If you haven't gotten your Girl Scouts cookies this year you are in luck! The Girl Scouts will be at the Essex Transfer Station on Saturday, April 22, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., selling their absolutely amazing cookies. Stop by and get your favorites! (Town of Essex – Government via Facebook)
  3. You're invited to join in the discussion about Square Foot Gardening, which will be held on Thursday, April 20 at 7 p.m. in the Program Room of the Essex Library. Registration is required. Dan Williams, a certified instructor with the Square Foot Gardening Foundation will be leading the talk. Come and learn about a gardening method that utilizes space efficiently and reduces the waste and work involved with a row garden.
