DEEP RIVER, CT — Three Connecticut towns have landed on a list of the nation's best underrated winter tourism spots. Deep River came in at No. 62.

Here's what FamilyDestinationsGuide.com had to say about what Deep River has to offer: "This charming, riverside community takes on a tranquil and picturesque quality during the winter months. Families can explore its historic downtown, visit unique shops and cozy cafes, and enjoy scenic walks along the Connecticut River. Deep River's proximity to state parks and nature reserves provides opportunities for winter hiking and wildlife observation."

Two other Connecticut towns, Pomfret and Kent, made the list at 96 and 111 respectively.

While Aspen's famous ski slopes and Alaska's mesmerizing Northern Lights get a lot of attention, the report noted that there are plenty of other great spots to travel to this winter.

"Take Atmore, Alabama, for example," FamilyDestinationsGuide.com wrote. "Beyond its casinos, it is home to the Magnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve — a paradise for nature lovers — and the historic Atmore Renaissance Faire. Similarly, Nevada's Black Rock Desert is known primarily for the Burning Man festival. But come winter, it reveals an incredible landscape of pristine beauty."

The site surveyed 3,000 experienced travelers and hoped to encourage others to explore beyond the usual and "experience the diverse beauty America holds."

No. 1 on the list was Buffalo, WY with High Springs, FL coming in second.
