- It's almost time for the Steam Train Half Marathon & Relay at the Essex Steam Train. Do you think you are fast enough to beat a train? You can run the entire race alone, or you can split the difference and run half and have a teammate run the other half as a relay. The Steam Train Half Marathon and two-person relay is the only road race against a turn-of-the-century steam train in the United States and it's right here in the tri-town area. Making this event super unique the runners race the train while families and friends can ride the train and cheer on the runners as the train and the runners leave the station together. This year the event will be held on Saturday, March 25. Run, ride the train, sponsor or volunteer! Registration is currently open at https://runsignup.com/Race/CT/Essex/BeatTheTrain. Spectators can purchase tickets directly through the Essex Steam Train & Riverboat website: https://essex-steam-train-riverboat.myshopify.com/.../bea...?. To learn more about sponsorship or volunteer opportunities, you can reach out via Facebook or email at epatterson@chrhealth.org. (Tri-Town via Facebook)
- Volunteers are needed for the 2023 Household Hazardous Waste & Paper Shredding Events. The River Cog needs three volunteers at each Household Hazardous Waste event and two volunteers at the paper shredding events. There are seven HHW events and four paper shredding events scheduled for 2023. For more information please call 860- 581-8554 or email info@rivercog.org. Hope to see you there! (essexct.gov)
- If you’re hoping to add a four-legged ball of love and affection to your household, look no further than these animal shelters in the Essex-Chester-Deep River area for a pet you can adopt. Looking to adopt a lovable new family member? A great place to begin your search is at Forgotten Felines Inc, where Tanner the cat is waiting patiently, or another local adoption agency. If you aren't sure if you have time to take care of a pet year-round, many shelters also offer opportunities to foster pets until they are placed in appropriate homes. Here at Patch, with a little help from our friends at Petfinder, we round up a list each week of all the pets recently put up for adoption in your area. If you're a cat person, meet Wednesday, a Domestic Short Hair up for adoption. Or if dogs are more your thing, there are several great dogs available, too.(Patch)
