- "Today is a big day for eating lots of amazing food, but did you know that the average person wastes 288 pounds of food per year? That’s the equivalent of 29 turkeys per person! We’ve got some helpful tips to mitigate food waste this year. 1) Utilize your freezer! Too many leftovers? Use reusable containers to freeze those delicious leftovers! Or if you feel like sharing, ask your guest to bring containers so they can take the extras home. 2) Don't trash scraps! Peelings and trimmings from vegetables and fruits can be used to make homemade stock. 3) Be mindful! We all love eating on Thanksgiving but sometimes we don’t eat everything on our plate. Be mindful about what and how much you take. Happy Thanksgiving!" (Town of Essex – Government via Facebook)
- Sustainable Deep River, Essex and Chester are co-sponsoring a free community recycling workshop, “What’s IN & What’s OUT,” on December 6 at 6:30 pm at Deep River Town Hall. Sherill Baldwin of CT Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) will be discussing “blue bin” materials, CT’s universal recycling list and more. At this interactive workshop, attendees will get answers to their recycling questions like: “Am I recycling correctly?" and "Are all these plastic bottles actually getting recycled?” The benefits of recycling and the costs of not managing the waste stream will also be discussed. Deep River was recently awarded an SMM grant to pilot a food scraps waste reduction initiative. The pilot is scheduled to begin this winter." (Sustainable Deep River)
