Here are the top three stories in Essex-Chester-Deep River today:
- Honoring veterans in his family, which include his grandfather, father and son, long time Deep River resident Paul Knudsen, who is the House Committee Chair for the renovation of the Essex Veterans Memorial Hall is working hard to help renovate the Memorial Hall for others to enjoy. According to a zip06.com article, "Paul estimates the renovation project will cost approximately $100,000, with members of the organization contributing, as Paul is, time and labor. The Essex Foundation will match gifts to the renovation project up to $50,000. The matching challenge will expire on Wednesday, Nov. 30. The Veterans Memorial Hall was originally the Centerbrook Schoolhouse when the three villages that make up Essex had separate elementary schools. After World War II, the town deeded the building to the veterans’ organization for $1, stipulating the group be responsible for its maintenance. The impetus for the renovation is not simply to improve the Veterans Memorial Hall for its members but to make it more useful as a community resource in emergency situations. To contribute to the Essex Veterans Memorial Hall Rehabilitation Project, go to: TheEssexFoundation.org/matching-gift-challenge or send a check payable to the Essex Foundation to The Essex Foundation, PO Box 64, Essex, CT 06426." - It's time to start thinking about the upcoming holiday season. Trees in the Rigging Community Carol Sing & Parade will be held in downtown Essex on Sunday, November 27 at 4:30 p.m. The Connecticut River Museum, the Essex Board of Trade and Essex Historical Society combine to present this annual event that includes a traditional, lantern-lit carol stroll down Main Street where spectators are invited to bring their own lanterns or flashlights and join in . Make a “Boat Float” for Trees in the Rigging Street Parade! In addition to the Sailing Masters Fife & Drum Corps, vintage autos and festive carolers, returning to this year’s land parade will be “Boat Floats” or small watercraft on trailers that are decorated for the holidays and can be towed down Essex’s streets. Members of the public are invited to decorate their own boat to be pulled or walked down the parade route. We appreciate small-scale efforts – so folksy, homemade and low-budget (or no-budget) – will suit the spirit of the parade perfectly. Rowboats, kayaks and canoes will all work, too! Please contact Essex Historical Society to register your Boat Float and receive important driving and parking info: 860-767-0681 or mjosefiak@essexhistory.org (mailto:mjosefiak@essexhistory.org) The stroll steps off at 4:30 pm at the Essex Town Hall on West Avenue and ends at the Connecticut River Museum with more festivities and an appearance from Santa! Hope to see you there!(Essex Historical Society)
- The Board of Directors of the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce announced that Larry McHugh will be retiring as president of the Chamber at the end of the year and will appoint Johanna Bond the Chamber’s next president/CEO.“We are extremely grateful for Larry’s tremendous leadership of the organization and his strong advocacy for the businesses and communities of Middlesex County," said Kristen Roberts, Chair of the Chamber’s Board of Directors. "In his 39 years, Larry has built the chamber to be one of the largest in the state and one that members have come to rely on to effectively represent their interests."(Patch)
