  1. Mark your calendars to support local artists. A Summer Marketplace for Artisans will be held on July 31st, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 245 Main Street on the lawn of the Stone House. The event will include women-owned businesses and showcase their unique work. There will also be live music and food. This is a pet-friendly, free event. Hope to see you there! (Patch)
  2. Have you heard of pee-cycling? Well, now you have! Sustainable Essex has some interesting reading on the subject that you may want to check out, especially if you are a gardener. Reportedly, urine is a fantastic fertilizer and "just like animal manure, human waste can be sanitized and transformed into natural, sustainably-produced fertilizer for use on agricultural soils." Learn more about pee-cycling here. (Sustainable Essex)
  3. Time to add yet one more deadly disease to our list of things to be on the lookout for. A Connecticut scientist charged with monitoring mosquito-borne diseases says to expect human cases of West Nile virus "any day now." Reportedly there are already cases of West Nile Virus in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. West Nile virus has been detected in Connecticut every year since it was introduced into North America in 1999. So be vigilant and protect yourself by; minimizing time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, be sure door and window screens are tight-fitting and in good repair, wear shoes, socks, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors for long periods of time, or when mosquitoes are more active. Clothing should be light colored and made of tightly woven materials that keep mosquitoes away from the skin, use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in an unscreened structure and to protect infants when outdoors and consider the use of an EPA-approved mosquito repellent and apply according to directions when it is necessary to be outdoors.(Patch)
  4. According to a recent article in the Hartford Courant, "Connecticut officials have begun rolling out a wide-ranging new law aimed at reducing vehicle emissions, including adding 10 more electric vehicles that will now be eligible for the state’s rebate program. The legislation, which increases funding for the initiative, raises the MSRP cap for eligible purchased and leased battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and fuel cell electric vehicles to $50,000. In turn, state residents who meet certain income requirements can qualify for up to $9,500 in incentives depending on the type of vehicle. (Hartford Courant)
